Responsibilities
A farmer works as an entrepreneur on his own farm or one he rents. The work is normally done by his own family. On the farm estate there might be fields, livestock and forest. The farmer tends the fields and forest, engages in animal husbandry, services and repairs machinery and sees to the accounts and finances. Farmers plan their working day themselves and are responsible for the work that gets done. The year-round nature of the work ties the farmer to his farm. The work is hard and most of it is outdoors.
Skills
The occupation is not for those who are allergic to feed or animal dust. The job calls for a knowledge of crops and animal husbandry, an understanding of economics, perseverance, organisational ability and a broad-minded attitude.
