Responsibilities
A microbiologist studies the structure and vital functions of micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses. He analyses cell and tissue cultures taken from plants, human beings and animals. Microbiologists work in environmental research, the food and pharmaceutical industry, hospital laboratories or research units.
Hospital work involves the study of patient samples. The focus in the food and pharmaceutical industry is more on product development. Microbiologists work in their own study and use research tools to aid them. They also work in the field. It is mostly daytime work. It requires a logical mind, a scientific approach and meticulous working methods.
Skills
Microbiologists need to be able to work on their own initiative, have teamwork skills and a good knowledge of English. They also need perseverance.
