Responsibilities
Professional dressmakers make and sell clothes and other textiles. The work may also extend to repairs and showing clothes. They are employed in such places as dressmaker’s shops, workshops and clothes shops and by the clothing industry. Many work as private entrepreneurs.
The work varies; it could be on a production line or made-to-measure work in a small firm. The workplaces are usually small. The main things you need are a work table, ironing equipment and a sewing and seaming machine. In industry people also work shifts.
Skills
For this job you need manual skills and a knowledge of colours, shapes, styles and trends. You also need to be creative, thorough and good with customers. Textile dust can cause symptoms for those allergic to it.
